Mentor Text Linky - Petey and Pru and the Hullabaloo

Happy Sunday everyone. The sun was shining in my little neck of the woods today which made me happy since I had a lot of outdoor work to get done and could not take one more rainy, overcast day. Unfortunately, I am now very far behind in my school work!! But Sunday is the day I must stop and read (and link up if I can) Amanda and Stacia's Must Read Mentor Text Linky!!

This week's theme is Language Arts. I was super lucky to be contacted by the lovey people at Thomas Allen & Son to see if I would like some free books and it took me about 5 seconds to think that one over. It is always an exciting day when a box of books shows up at your door. This is what they sent this time:

So many great books, but the one I am sharing today is this one:

Here is the description from Amazon:

Petey is enjoying a peaceful afternoon of gardening when his good friend Pru starts to cause trouble. Petey reacts in turn, and before long, things have escalated from a scuffle to a tussle to a true hullabaloo!

This beautifully illustrated story about the true meaning of friendship is packed with excitement and near disaster as well as vocabulary-expanding words that are fun to say and thrilling to master
.

I will be using this book all week as we dive into word choice. I can't even begin to explain how happy I am to have another book to teach word choice with - this is my last year of having my students for three years in a row and I desperately needed a new book!!

Here are some of the pages - there is not a lot of text but each page has at least one great word!!

Here is what I am doing with the book this week. First before reading the book I am giving the students a page with one of the words from the text at the top. They have to write down what they think the word means. After we read the book they will write what they think the word means now based on the text and the illustrations (definitions are included on the inside covers :)  ). Here are sample pages. If you want a copy of the pages click here.

In word study we will be working on adjectives (we started last week). I have three word study groups in my class. This week I am using Joanne's Synonym Posters and Synonym Rings to select my words. I am taking a boring word like mad and giving each group a synonym based on their ability level (angry, annoyed and furious are my choices for mad). I have the synonym rings photocopied, cut and hole punched and ready for the ring - which I do not have enough of!!!! But as soon as I get rings for all of them (or I may break down and use brass fasteners) I will be giving each student their own list of awesome words!! I made the cover of their ring red and the back green - I am going to tell them that they need to stop before they hand in their writing and look through the words and they may only "go" after they have used at least one word - red light, green light!!

We will also be making a "Word Nerd" bulletin board which I will share when it is done but the big focus this week will be on collecting and using as many great words as possible.

To help them along I printed these posters from Rachel Lamb . I had them printed at the print shop on 11x17 paper and love the way they turned out!

  1. The posters look great! We finally had a nice sunny day here too - but a chilly one! If we have indoor recess tomorrow I'm going to go a wee bit crazy. :)

  2. Wow!! I'm glad it only took you 5 seconds to make that decision!! How awesome is that?!?

This book looks so cute and I love the words in it! Your activity for word choice goes perfectly with it, and I can only imagine how hard it is to have the same class for 3 years and have to really search out good books! I'm not sure I could do it...I have too many books that I love to read over and over... I should probably expand my horizons...but then again this linky has helped me do that and now I feel like I have more books than I can possibly read on my "to read" list!

All of this looks amazing! Thanks for linking up my friend! I'm so glad you had some sunshine today!
