Dollar Stores - There Should be Laws!!!

Hi everybody - believe it or not I actually went to work today and taught children!!!! Funny, it seemed like a long break but after 1 day it already feels like we never even left  : )

So I am just stopping by today to vent a little and make a proposal. I, like most of you, love dollar stores....BUT there are some things I think need to change!! I know I could just make suggestions, or we could have rules, but I really think we need LAWS that can be enforced so I do not keep having the same dollar store dilemmas over and over again.

Here are my proposed laws:

#1. ALL dollar stores in the same chain MUST carry the same products. The reason, so that when I read a blog post from someone in Florida, or Kingston or Kentucky and they share what they bought at "Dollar Tree"  and I run out to my Dollar Tree the product will actually be there!!! I am not saying little independent dollar stores, I am talking about the big chain dollar stores.

#2. Dollar stores must keep a class set of items in stock. The reason, so that when I go to buy frames for a craft, or one more set of notebooks or birthday treats I do not stand in the aisle for 5 minutes counting, only to be 3 short and then spend another 5 minutes looking around the item furiously hoping to find 3 more of the same item just placed haphazardly nearby. How they will be able to accomplish this, or what constitutes a class set is not my problem - I just make the laws. Perhaps their registers will ding if someone is buying a product that leaves only 22 of those items on the shelf they are asked for teacher id - if they are not teachers they have to put it back - is this unfair, yes, will it make my life easier, undoubtedly.

and the most important of all of the fake (for now) laws

#3 Dollar stores must notify teachers (email, Instagram, FB, billboards - I don't care how) when a product is going to be discontinued!!!! I am so tired of falling in love with a product or depending on a product only to find out "Uh ya, crazy lady, like we don't carry that anymore!". Here is my most recent experience.

Over the holidays I bought a class set of these:

I give one to each student to keep in their basket. They use them to wipe-off their daily math work (we do our morning math on page protectors). Okay they are kinda sweet, hearts and all and Valentine's is coming up. My kids thought they were great. BUT they are bigger than what I wanted and I only bought them because they no longer have the ones I really want, the ones I bought back in August, these ones here:

They were perfect and now, sadly, they are gone....

So, I think there should be laws, these 3 laws in particular. I am sure that teachers are the number one customer base for dollar stores - I think if we all got together we could make it happen.

Hope you all are having a great week!! And if you find any good deals at a dollar store be sure and let me know : )

  3. I'm all for the laws. In fact, I think you should send this post to the Dollar Tree! I blame Joanne for most of my Dollar Tree obsessions. They know her by name at her local store. True story! Glad you finally got out of the basement and into the classroom. Only two days left and then it's jammie time again!!!!!! XOX

  4. Thanks for the laugh. I hear you about not having enough of an item, or finding something that works and not being able to go back later for more. That is my story too! If you live in a big area, maybe you are lucky enough to have access to more than one dollar store, but in small communities, the selection is also smaller and so the problems stated are more likely to be common.
I often sigh when I see the deals shown for Target as well, because our One Spot is very small and usually has very little to choose from unless I hit the after Christmas, Halloween, etc. sale. I guess that is good for stocking up for next year, but I would rather have it now!

Okay, enough of the vent from me. Thanks for the chance to smile at the end of a long day.

  5. Hahahaha!! I love this and I totally agree!! It's so frustrating! I have no good Dollar stores near me. They are usually trashed when I go in and I get really frustrated, and don't even get me started on trying to take three kids in with me. Ugh. So I don't go. Hardly ever. And I'm with Charlene above me. Our Target Dollar spot is tiny and by the time I read someone's post about all of the awesome stuff they scored, it's all totally gone, if it was ever even there to begin with. So frustrating. They need to do some sort of teacher membership and give us first dibs online or something and we get free shipping if we want any of their cute dollar stuff. That could be the 4th law!!
You make me laugh and I appreciate it!!

  6. Great post! I am always seeing things on other blogs and I don't know if just never came to my store or if they are on their way or if they came and all sold. They could sure make it easier on teachers. ;P

  7. Hmmmm...I wonder if you were talking about me as the Florida blogger who RAVES about Dollar Tree??!! You know how I feel about this place, so I'll have to defend them! LOL! My Dollar Tree is the BEST! Now see, I could offer a solution for you...move near me! :) I could make sure our Dollar Tree always has two class sets of everything! I create some of my best lessons on the aisles of this store! (I guess when employees joke with me if I've clocked in when they see me, I frequent the store a lot!) Thanks for the laugh and I may have to do a rebuttal post! LOL! I'll have to send you a care package!

  8. Sounds like some great suggestions! You should send those right to the Dollar Store headquarters! I definitely hate when there are not enough of one item. That is the worst! Glad you had a great first day back!

  9. How about if we just cut to the chase, when the Dollar Store and Target One Spot get a new shipment in they should immediately place it in a teachers only area and send us an email. When and only when we have all agreed that we are ready to share with the general public then they may stock the regular store shelves!!! Who would vote for that one!!!! I know only teachers.... And it is pretty selfish, but... Can I get an "hey! that would work!"
