Ice Cream Day - Spark Student Motivation

I am here today to share an idea that I will be using very soon to keep us all sane and working as we head towards the end of the school year. As you may know I do an ABC countdown to the end of the year. This is an idea I got from Jivey and the Collaboration Cuties last year. It was a huge success and my students have been asking about it for the last few weeks. They are so excited to get started with our countdown (so am I). This weekend I am planning out our calendar - some days I am changing from last year - but some are must dos!! One of the must do days is Ice Cream Day!! The ABC Countdown and Ice Cream Day are a great way to keep students motivated so I am linking up with the most motivating teacher I know, Joanne at Head Over Heels for Teaching for her linky...

Our countdown starts on Thursday. We will be starting with A is for ABC day and we will be starting  ABC Countdown booklets. B is for Bubble Gum day. F is for Field Trip day - since we have a field day on the right day, woohoo. And I is for Ice Cream Day.

We will spend our math class working on combination problem solving. Here is a pic.

I let students work out the problem how ever they want - but I do use it as a chance to review problem solving strategies and skills (making a tree diagram, using short forms, working in a organized manner).

Students will also get a chance to create a picture of their ideal ice cream treat. I have my students create a picture of their ideal ice cream sundae and label all the parts.

The best part - in the afternoon we have an ice cream sundae buffet. I bring in ice cream, whip cream, cherries, sprinkles, gummy worms and chocolate syrup. I do not bring in all the options listed on the math problems : )    Students make a yummy treat. One year we had to have our ice cream buffet in the staff room since I do not have A/C in my room and it was soooo hot the ice cream would not last 2 minutes!! I think the students were more excited about being in the staff room eating then they were about the ice cream.

The ice cream problems I use with my students are in this little pack over in my TPT store.

It is only $1.00 - so to help you check out I put some of my other math activities on sale for $1.00 for a limited time (Math Operation Review with QR Codes is a great deal if I say so myself!!)

This ice cream math is similar to the hot chocolate math problems I use in the winter. If you want to check that out you can pick up a free copy at my TpT store.

Hope you are all having a great weekend! Remember I will be getting a blog update soon with a new look and new name....same me : )  !

  1. The kids must love your ice cream bar! (And isn't it funny how curious they are about the 'off limits' places? I once found two of mine peeking through the glass of ours. On the floor...the middle is frosted glass!)

    1. Just bought your ice cream and math operation review cards. Even though I teach second grade, the ice cream ones will be great for whole class and there are plenty we can do from the other pack! Thank you!
