I am joining up with Courtney at Swimming Into Second for her linky party.
Yesterday I blogged about my love of books - a love I try to pass on to my students. I am very lucky right now to be teaching a group of boys that love to read. The type of readers who read every spare minute they get - even - dare I say it - yes even at recess!
I have had years though when the boys in my class were definetly reluctant readers. I have found the best hook I have for them is humour. Yes, I try non-fiction and sports related books too, but my greatest success is always the humour.
I try and read funny picture books that they then re-read (and re-read and re-read) before moving on to funny chapter books and graphic novels.
Here are some of the books that have worked well with boys in my clasroom.
Anything by Mo Willems:
Especially the Pigeon books:
Melanie Watt`s books - especiallly Chester and Scaredy Squirrel
The boys are also fans of Walter the Farting Dog and Stanley.
And of course Dav Pilkey can do no wrong - funny picture books and then on to his graphic and graphic chapter books!!
The boys in my class have always enjoyed Junie B Jones.
They also enjoy mystery books or books with things hidden in the pictures like the books of Graeme Base.
They have devoured all of the Wimpy Kid series as well as the Bone graphic novels.
This year Silverwing and all the sequels and prequels have been very popular.
The last sure fire hit with my boys - books with dragons (pun intended).
I have loved reading all the other book suggestions for boys being offered - in fact I have my library account open at the same time so I can toggle back and forth between reading and ordering!!
I found this link to Chickadee Jubilee super helpful.

Great choices! I haven't read Walter the Farting Dog... I bet the boys would love that one!

Walter the Farting Dog is great because it is a series and really works well for making predictions and using their schema - Walter always saves the day with his farts!
DeleteJust had to tell you that I love your new blog design! Isn't Megan wonderful to work with? She designed my blog, too! Also, I read Silverwing aloud to my class every year. After my son read it, he read everything Ken Oppel every wrote! He's a great author!
