Stress-Free Giveaway

This is the time of year I normally become very stressed out - the home stretch before testing. But for the first time in 15 years I am not doing any testing!! Woo-hoo. The change of grades has made for a stressful year (lots of questioning and floundering) but not having to worry about testing is one of the biggest perks!!

But I know many of you have just finished or are entering into testing season so I am joining up with some bloggy friends to bring you some tips to reduce stress and a chance to win some gifts to keep you calm and teaching on!

Two things that have helped me keep calm (ok, calm-ish) during testing are acronyms and the alphabet (clear as mud?).

First up acronyms. Teaching students acronyms to respond to questions helps them feel more confident and keeps them focussed during testing. Here is one I made for my friend to fit her acronym (based on the interactive note from Erin at Lovin Lit)

I also made smaller versions for her student notebooks. The words are colour coded so that students can colour code their answers to show they included all 3 parts!!

This is the acronym I like to teach with.

My second tip has to do with the alphabet or really theme days.

My testing usually took place during the final 26 days of school - the days we were doing the alphabet countdown. When we weren't testing we were having fun with our theme - chewing gum, flying kites, etc. You can read more about it here. I got the idea from Collaboration Cuties and Jivey. Incorporating fun theme activities is a great way to keep student stress down (although it does takes some organization on the teachers's part!!).

I hope that my tips were helpful to you and if not, at least you get a chance to win one of four great prizes :)

  2. I'm DEFINITELY doing the ABC countdown this year! I keep forgetting-thanks for the reminder! Lucky you with no testing! I bet it's such a relief not to have that kind of pressure-other stresses of course, but one year off from testing would be nice. :) Miss you!
